[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]Here’s another ‘Georgia’ song. This time it’s “Going to Georgia” by the Mountain Goats from their 1994 album Zopilote Machine.

I’m sure by now most of you have given up on our little blog. Ha! Today I bring you the Masonic Temple, Smooth Ashlar Grand Lodge on the corner of Glenwood Ave and Moreland Ave (525 Moreland Ave). This thing has been abandoned since I first passed by this way over three years ago. It has a neato neon sign advertising itself hanging out front, you can see it pretty well in some of the pictures. Note the some of the graffiti - “Free China”? Huh? There’s a cute mural on one side as well.

That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate
This is my (Chris’) other tumblr, where I post music. Mostly it’s stuff I thought the two folks who occasionally checked it might like.
I also take requests.
I will also update it today.

just an update
Well, I haven’t posted a blog post in quite some time, and since I’m home sick today I thought maybe it might be time.
Things have been surprisingly busy since we arrived in the “A”. We’ve now been here 1 month and 12 days, and already our nights are filled with meetings (4 this week), I’ve been working full time (11 hour days if you include the traffic), Chris has battled it out with the financial aid people at GSU, we got engaged, we’ve made some friends, Tony and Kaitlin came to visit, and today Taryn and Ceci are moving in. When we moved we told ourselves we’d take some time for us, so much for that*.
Things are getting easier here—we’re not so broke, we don’t get lost every time we go out, etc—but for me this place is starting to feel more like home. For about the first three weeks we were here I cried every time I even talked about my family, and if I actually talked to my family…well I was a real mess.
But things are getting better. I really like this city, there’s so much to do, to eat, to explore. It’s got a rich history and it’s accessible—it’s really green. Every time we go somewhere new we add to the list of things to take visitors to, so if you come visit you can expect:
- ribs at Fat Matts
- the white supremacy tour of Atlanta (hosted by Dan, a must see)
- lake allatuna
- chicken and waffles at Thumb’s Up diner
- Charis bookstore
- chicken 65 at Zyka
- braised wings from anywhere in the hood
- big Jamaican meals for under $5 from just up the street
- tour of East Atlanta (hosted by Chris)
- “the brown crown” at Zesto’s
- burgers at Vortex Burger
Next up we want to check out the botanical gardens, they just opened up a canopy walk and it looks awesome. So, as you can see we’ve been exploring, and we haven’t run into much that didn’t rule (except the bugs and the oppressive humidity).
We’re still missing everyone at home but we’re starting to create a life together here—with old friends and new friends, love and one piece of furniture at a time.
xoxo, Katie
*Chris and I have actually been so busy that we both forgot our 2 year anniversary. About 4 days late I realized it, woke Chris up to tell him and he said, “I know, I remembered the day after but I was waiting until we’d actually have a second to celebrate to remind you”. Well we still haven’t had a second but we’ll let you know when we do.

But Why The Blimpie?!
Today we are celebrating Taryn’s birthday. Initially we were also going to buy a sofa, but an extended laundry sesh got in the way as well some horrible thunderstorms and torrential down-pours. We heard a whole bunch of sirens, but it’s always like that during a storm. Well…
The reason we could only post this article now is because they JUST opened Moreland back up. They closed it exactly between Ormewood and just after the tattoo shop across the street. So we were screwed. It seems as though someone had it in for the Blimpie. The Blimpie is exactly next door to our apartment. Though not delicious and kinda over-priced, it is not so bad it’s bomb-worthy (the ladies who work there are real nice).
When we stopped to ask a cop how we could get back to our house, he had no idea. He said he did not know what was taking them so long - the bomb squad had already done two detonations. He surmised they were “busy high-fiving each other”.

UPDATE: It actually was a bomb

Guardian against soliciting at the Edgewood Thumb’s Up and clearly my heavily armed southern counterpart. Kaitlin has a better picture of this picture that will replace this picture when it hits the interwebs.
Resemblance = uncanny.
